Listening to Trotz
Listening to Washington Capitals Head Coach Barry Trotz speak to the media following a first round playoff game matchup at the Verizon Center versus the New York Islanders

Welcome!

My name is William Hirsch and I’m glad you are here!

My journey down the reporter path started when I was a senior at St. John’s College High School in Washington D.C. as a a sports editor for St. John’s school newspaper, “The Sabre”. I quickly learned that being a sports reporter was something I had a high level of interest in and wanted to pursue further. I turned my focus to looking at the best school with the best journalism program and journalistic opportunities. West Virginia University was that best choice.

Once arriving on campus I had an ambition to start off with the best opportunity to gain the most experience with what I wanted to do. I chose Television Broadcast Journalism and decided to seek a job at the West Virginia University student run radio station. I spent all four years at WWVUFM-U92 Sports where I gained priceless knowledge. I believe that it attributed quite a bit to landing an internship with WRC-TV (NBC affiliate in DC) in the summer of 2012 between my sophomore and junior year and then WTTG Fox 5 in DC between my junior and senior year. During my senior year in 2013-2014 I was promoted to the position of Men’s Basketball Producer where I was credentialed for all WVU Men’s Basketball home games. I was able to interview the players after the games and sat in on Head Coach Bob Huggins’ press conferences. Occasionally, I made appearances on Mountaineer Sports Insiders at U92 to talk about the team throughout the season.

At the beginning of my senior year, I interned with Blue and Gold News which is a web based company owned by Scout.com that covers WVU sports. I was able to attend and film players and coaches press conferences during the season and post the interviews to the Blue and Gold News Youtube page.

In February of 2014 I joined the fine folks at the SmokingMusket.com which is the Sports Blog Nation site for WVU Sports. I currently still contribute to the Smoking Musket on a variety of WVU sports topics.

During the spring semester of my senior year at WVU (2014), I was one of two Business and Economic Reporters for WVU News. WVU News is a multiple award winning weekly college newscast run by WVU television broadcast seniors.

After graduation in May of 2014 I returned home to the DC area and wrote for numerous sports blogs in the area until August of 2014.

I landed a job in the area as a independent contractor for Verizon Digital Media Services doing groundbreaking industry work running ESPN3 and SEC Network web streams on the WatchESPN App and ESPN3.com. The venture has really taken off in recent months and I’m still working there as an independent contractor.

In March of 2015 I joined Sports Journey Media as a credentialed Washington Capitals reporter. I covered the Capitals in the 2015 post season and look forward to spending the upcoming 2015-2016 NHL season covering the Capitals.
